Research- Barthes Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs
Sabaidee P'Nong! Welcome to my first exercise post! In this assignment we covered Barthes Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs. Barthes theory was essentially that any sign or symbol has multiple meanings. For example, in the countries of Laos and Thailand we see the elephant as a very important symbol. A picture of an elephant in Barthes theory has multiple meanings. First, It would physically be a elephant. Secondly (Denotative and Connotative), an elephant can mean family, strength, prosperity, loyalty, and even longevity.
For this assignment we analyzed a scene from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. In this scene the "contestants" for the hunger games are being shown off. Katniss Everdeen (the main character) is shown wearing a particular dress. When she spins this dress goes from an elegant wedding like dress to a powerful all black dress. This scene shows that Katniss is trying to show her true feelings about the "games".
