The signifier is the literal description of something, while the signified is how someone can perceive a certain thing. For example, the color red. The color red is literally red however it can also be seen as a sign of anger.

Avengers Endgame uses signs very well. One example is the character Captain America. While Captain America is literally a superhero, he is also seen as a symbol of strength, patriotism, and justice.
